what is a flashbulb memory?

A

a theory proposed by Brown & Kulik in 1977
vivid memories of the circumstances surrounding a surprising and emotionally arousing event.

formation: high surprise + personal consequentiality = emotional arousal

maintenance: overt: sharing + covert: thinking = consolidation memory

STUDY ON FBM 9/11

A

Talarico & Rubin 2003
aim: to see the properties of flashbulb memory and their influence on emotion, and whether they are consistent over time over everyday memories
- 54 students
- record 9/11 memory + any other recent event
- 1, 6, 36 weeks later
- emotional response, vividness, and accuracy
- accuracy decreased in both, but perceived accuracy only decreased for everyday
