13th Amendment
The 13th amendment made slavery illegal everywhere in the United States.
14th Amendment
Declared that all persons born in the U.S were citizens and required the States to respect the rights of all U.S citizens.
15th Amendment
No denial of a vote based on race, color, or previous condition of enslavement.
Dates of Reconstruction
1865 – 1877
Period of the north and south coming back together after the Civil War.
Ten Percent Plan
It specified that a southern state could be readmitted into the Union once 10 percent of its voters swore an oath of allegiance to the Union.
Wade-Davis Bill
It required that a majority of a state’s prewar voters swear loyalty to the Union before the process of restoration could begin.
Black Codes
Laws passed to restrict African American’s freedom, and of forcing them to work based on low wages or debt.
Andrew Johnson and Lincoln’s plans for Reconstruction
Lincoln’s plan:
1) He wanted to bring the North and South back together quickly and didn’t want to heavily penalize the South.
Johnson’s plan:
1) Pardon offered to Southerners who swore allegiance to the Union.
2) States required to abandon secession, abolish slavery, and renounce the confederate debt.
3) States could amend constitutions (no allegiance requirement).
Scalawag
White southerner republican in the South.
Carpetbagger
Northerners who moved to the South after the Civil War,.
Sharecropping
A practice where former slaves could rent land from a landowner and farm on it. They were able to keep some of the food. They had to give money or crops to the landowner because they were renting the land. It was like a cycle. They were never really able to make enough money.
Women’s voting rights during Reconstruction
Women had no rights during reconstruction.
Freedman’s Bureau
An agency set up to assist freed slaves in obtaining relief, land, jobs, fair treatment, and education.
Klu Klux Klan
A post-Civil War American secret society advocating white supremacy.
