What happened after the union won the war?
Over 4 million slaves were freed and the south’s plantation economy was destroyed
What did the 13th Amendment do?
Freed slaves but didn’t give them equal rights
What was the freedmens bureau?
It helped freed slaves and poor southerners to rebuild their lives
What did the Freedmen’s bureau offer?
Food, shelter, school, legal and medical aid
What did Andrew Johnson do differently to Lincoln?
He treated the south better and took a more lenient approach
What did Johnson do about the Civil Rights Act?
He vetoed it which stopped giving African Americans equal rights
What did the 14th Amendment do?
Gave AA a citizenship
What did the reconstruction acts do?
It placed the south under military rule, and before they could rejoin the union the had to ratify the 14th amendment
What did congress do to ensure the south was following the RA?
They sent troops into the south to make sure there was peace and that AA we’re given the right to vote
What did the 15th Amendment do?
It ruled that citizens of the USA could not be denied the right to vote based on their race
What was the Ku Klux Klan?
A white supremacy group that lynched,murdered, beat and threatened AA
What did the Enforcement Acts do?
It made it illegal to use terror force or bribery to stop AA from voting (helped the government arrest the Klu Klux Klan)
What was the Economic Depression?
Caused high unemployment in the north so they lost interest in the south
