States would be added in pairs, states in the south would have slavery and north wouldn’t

Wanted to slowly end slavery and for owners to be compensated for losing their slaves

Allowed their territory to be voted if wether it has slavery or not
What was Abraham Lincoln’s view on slavery?
Thought it was immoral and opposed its spread into new territories
What did Lincoln’s election cause?
A secession (withdrawal) of seven states
What did the states that seceded form?
The confederate states of America with Jefferson Davis as their president
What did Lincoln do in South Carolina that triggered the start of the civil war?
Set up troops at Fort Sumter which was seen as a lack of respect
What sparked the beginning of the civil war?
Lincoln sent more troops to Fort Sumter and said he would only attack if the south did first the south attacked the fort in April 1861
How did black people face racism and discrimination in the Union Army?
Fought in segregated regiments led by white officers
Ofter given menial jobs
Given worse rations
How did black soldiers face more danger than white?
If they were captured by the south in battle the confederates threatened to enslave them
Why were confederates unwilling to arm slaves?
In fear of them rebelling
They were only accepted as troops in 1865 when the south was close to losing
