Andrew Johnson: compare/contrast him to Lincoln. Why did Lincoln choose him as his running mate in 1864?

A

Johnson had a different plan for reconstruction. The main difference in their plans was the rights of freedmen. Lincoln chose Johnson because they had differing political opinions, to show the newformed bond of the Union. Symbol of peace by unifying the presidential ticket.

A

Presidential reconstruction (1865 - 1867) allowed more leniency towards southerners concerning their readmission into the Union. Congressional recon. blamed the south for the civil war (1867 - 1877).

Subsidies: A government incentive to get you to get something, in the form of cash, land, tax break (think bribe). When the government said they’ll give you $1000 per mile of track, railroad companies will create larger railroads. This led to the Depression of 1873; too many resources into the railroads,
