Reconstruction Time Period
The period following the Civil War during which the US gov’t work to reunite the nation and to rebuild the Southern States.
The Reconstruction Amendments
These are additions or changes to the US Constitution
13 Amendment
Outlaws Slavery in US (Abolishes Slavery)
14th Amendment
Gives Civil Rights and citizenship to all African Americans in US (Become citizens/ Equal Rights)
15th Amendment
Gives voting rights to all black men over the age of 21 in the USA (Can vote)
Jim Crow Laws
A Law that enforced segregation in the Southern States.
Segregation
The forced separation of people of different races in public places
Black Codes
Laws passed in the Southern States during Reconstruction that greatly limited the freedom and rights of African Americans. (Restrictions against African Americans in the US)
Poll Tax
A special tax that a person had to pay in order to vote
Literacy Tests
Reading and writing exams given in order to cast a vote in the South (Backfires because many white southerners are illiterate)
Grandfather Clause
If your grandfather can vote, you can vote, but if your grandfather could not, you can not… this is the answer to the South’s desire to keep Blacks out of the voting class.
Freedmen’s Bureau
An agency established by congress in 1865 to help poor people throughout the South. It helped African Americans obtain their rights (free service).
Discrimination
Unjust and prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things especially on the grounds of race, age and, or sex. (A.K.A- The negative treatment of others because they are different.)
KKK
Ku Klux Klan: a secret society created by white southerners in 1866 that used terror and violence to keep African Americans from obtaining their civil rights.
Radical Republicans of Reconstruction
Members of congress who felt that Southern States needed to make great social changes before they could be readmitted to the union.
Transcontinental Railroad
a railroad system that crossed the continental United States; Construction began in 1863.
Military 5 Zones
Under the Military Reconstruction Act the South would split into 5 military zones controlled by former Union Generals during Reconstruction. This is martial law and was going to be used to make sure the South followed the various rules of Reconstruction.
Plessy vs. Ferguson
U.S Supreme Court case that established the “Separate but Equal” doctrine for public facilities. (Equal is not defined by constitution) publicly separated by race.
“Separate but Equal”
Legalizes Jim Crow Laws and the Segregation of people by races.

Went to the South and stole stuff from the people
