- What is Reconstruction and when did it take place?
The process to put back union and repair the damage in the south. 1865- 1877
- What was the Civil War and when did it take place?
A war between the union (north) and confederates (south) between 1861-1865
- Who began Reconstruction?
Radical Republicans
- Give examples of things that needed to be reconstructed?
Infrastructure, families, political relationships, banking systems, etc.
- Who were the Radical Republicans? What were their beliefs?
Northerners= racist but didn’t believe in slavery
- Who was the Planter Aristocracy?
What were their beliefs? Rich white southerners, racist = believed in slavery
- Who were the Freedmen?
Newly freed slaves
- Who wins the Civil War?
Rad Republicans = union (north)
- What do they need to justify? How?
The war through change
- What is their main goal and how does it conflict with the 13th Amendment?
Main goal = political power. When slaves are freed à increased population in south à more southern reps in congress.
- What is the difference between economic independence and economic opportunity?
a. Econ. Independence= ability to provide for yourself.
b. Econ Opportunity = chance to do for yourself
- What is not given to the slaves by the RR?
Land = Econ. Independence

Econ. Opportunity through the right to vote
What needed to occur for the main goal of the RR to be reached?
Blacks needed to vote and vote RR. The RR needed candidates willing to run in the south.

Sent military to protect blacks and carpetbaggers
