REBT Flashcards
1
Q
what is REBT?
A
rational emotive behavior therapy
2
Q
basic premise(s) of REBT?
A
- Humans have potential for rational “straight” thinking and irrational “crooked” thinking
- We have the propensity for self-preservation and self-destruction
- Irrational beliefs are learned from significant others during childhood and recreated in adulthood
- Irrational beliefs are strengthened through self-repetition and we then behave in ways that are consistent with these early-indoctrinated irrational beliefs.
3
Q
emotional disturbance is a result of?
A
the three basic musts
4
Q
what are the three basic musts?
A
- “I must do well and win the approval of others for my performances or else I am no good.”
- “Other people must treat me considerately, fairly, kindly, and in exactly the way I want them to treat me. If they don’t, they are no good and they deserve to be condemned and punished.”
- “I must get what I want, when I want it; and I must not get what I don’t want. If I don’t get what I want, it’s terrible, I can’t stand it, and life is no good for depriving me of what I must have.”
5
Q
what does REBT assume about people?
A
We have strong tendencies to be dogmatic (shoulds, musts, oughts)
6
Q
what is the A-B-C framework?
A
- A = Activating Event
- B = Belief (irrational)
- C = Consequence (feelings & behavior)
- D = Disputing (detect, debate, discriminate)
- E = Effect (effective rational belief)
- F = Feeling (new set of feelings)
7
Q
therapeutic goals?
A
- Basic goal is to change client’s dysfunctional feelings and behaviors into healthy ones through cognitive restructuring: replace irrational beliefs with rational beliefs
- Learn to separate evaluation of themselves and evaluation of their behaviors
- Help client achieve unconditional self-acceptance and unconditional other acceptance
- Encourage clients to be less emotionally reactive; to feel sadness and disappointment, but not depression, shame, and guilt
8
Q
this type of therapy is good for what kinds of people?
A
very intellectual people / rational thinkers
- people who aren’t in touch with their feelings
9
Q
this theory is used to dispute____?
A
your irrational beliefs
10
Q
differences between REBT and CBT?
A
- REBT is highly directive, persuasive, and confrontational with a focus on the
teaching role of the therapist - REBT therapists view maladaptive beliefs as irrational and nonfunctional
- REBT views therapists primarily as teachers and thus, a warm personal relationship is not important
