examine and restructure core beliefs (inaccurate)
what types of beliefs do we all have?
core beliefs (core schema): about the self, the world, future, and past
emotional difficulties are a result of what?
cognitive distortions
what are the 7 cognitive distortions?
o Arbitrary inference
o Selective abstraction
o Overgeneralization
o Magnification and minimization
o Personalization
o Labeling and mislabeling
o Dichotomous thinking
what is arbitrary inference?
conclusions based on inadequate and irrelevant information (e.g., catastrophizing)
what is selective abstraction?
tendency to focus on the negative aspects of an event to support core beliefs
what is overgeneralization?
coming to extreme conclusions based on the results of one event
what is magnification and minimization?
Magnify the negative and minimize the
positive
what is personalization?
Relating external events to oneself even there is no evidence to do so
what is labeling/mislabeling?
Current perception of oneself is based on mistakes made in the past
what is dichotomous thinking?
Black-and-white thinking (all good or all bad)
what are some differences between REBT and CBT?
- CT uses Socratic dialogue (open-ended questions) to get clients to reflect on their core beliefs
- The goal of CT is to collaborate with clients to get then to test the validity of their assumptions: Collaborative Empiricism
- CT therapists view maladaptive beliefs as inaccurate
- CT views people as living by rules; rules become problematic when they are unrealistic, or are used inappropriately and excessively
- CT focuses on the quality of the relationship (empathy and sensitivity);
