Why didn’t the burnings work?

A

-Long process.
-Created a bad reputation - ‘bloody Mary’.
-Protestant martyrs - making people’s faith deepen and be proud to be a Protestant.
-Hard to know whether people actually believed in catholicism or pretended to believe in it out of fear of the repercussions.
-Caused 800 of the wealthy Protestants to flee.

A
  • Orders were given for sheriffs and JPs to raise forces.
  • 10th July, LJG proclaimed Queen.
  • Mary appealed to Charles V for assistance.
  • Mary moved to Framlington Castle and had forces of around 20,000 bolstered by the Earl of Oxford.
  • Northumberland left London to face Mary.
  • Privy Council left the tower and said they had fallen to error - Northumberland lost his support once he left.

What happened during Wyatt’s rebellion?

A
  • Rebels reached Ludgate, half a KM from the Queen.
  • Meant to be supported by a French fleet blocking the English channel.
  • Plan leaked by Edward Courtenay to Gardiner.
  • The Duke of Norfolk returned to court when his troops joined the rebellion.
  • Rebellion, led by Sir James Croft, Sir Peter Carew and Sir Thomas Wyatt.
  • Wyatt raised an army of 3000.
  • Wyatt delayed at Cooling Castle and wasted time.

99 rebels executed -= Wyatt, LJG, Guildford Dudley and Duke of Surrey.
