Realistic Conflict Theory Flashcards
Description of the theory (generally)
> also known as Realistic Group Conflict Theory
RCT explains how intergroup hostility can arise:
1. conflicting goals
2. competition over limited resources
it explains feelings of prejudice and discrimination towards the out-group
Description: scarcity of resources
> scarce resources = higher prejudice
people want others who are similar to them to survive so their genetics and beliefs are passed on to the next generation
we feel the need to blame someone else to avoid lowering our self esteem
Evaluation: supporting studies
Robbers Cave Study
- Sherif assessed conflict as a result of competition
- conflict quickly developed, demonstrating competition can lead to prejudices and discriminatory behaviour
Evaluation: opposing studies
Tyerman and Spencer (1983) conducted a similar study to the Robbers Cave study:
- English boy scouts who knew each other before the study were divided into groups
- competition remained friendly throughout
- suggests that prejudice may be caused by factors other than competition
Evaluation: application
> offers an explanation for the origin of prejudice and ways to reduce it
