realistic conflict theory Flashcards
outline RCT
Arises when there are two groups of equal status through competition and zero sums fate (there can only be one winner) as well as limited resources such as food, water.
give research to support
sherif conducted a study on 2 groups of young boys aged 11at a boot camp. there was hostility towards the outgroup as they burnt the flag, swore and raided the cabins of the opposition. this was resolved using superordinate goals (fixing a broken car and a water tap) the boys from the two group chose to catch the bus home together.
lacks inter rater reliability - when replicated using English Boy Scouts, there was no in-group out group prejudice. suggesting there is a cultural element at play.
what are superordinate goals
goals were the two groups have to come together and cooperate in order to achieve the common aim.
