Q

give research to support that there is no cultural difference in obidence

A

Blass (2012) calculated the average obedience rate for 8 non-US Milgram replications at 66%, compared to an average of 61% for US replications. These are clearly very similar, suggesting that obedience is a universal social behaviour and culture does not impact on it.

Q

what do milligrams results suggest about culture and gender differences differences.

A

milligrams hypothesis was to study whether germans are built differently. he found that 65% of his American sample went all the way to 450V and blindly obi suggesting that there is no cultural difference in obedience between Americans and germans.

Milgram (1963) conducted one study using a relatively small sample of 40 female participants, and found no difference in obedience between this group and the males in his original study (65% obedience in both). Female participants did however report higher levels of stress and tension than male participants, perhaps because women are generally more empathetic than men. suggesting that there is no gender difference in obidence.

Q

give research to support obidence is affected by culture

A

Kilhman & Mann (1974) found a very low level of obedience (24%) in Australia which is a low PDI scoring country. This can be compared to Dolinski (2017) who found a 90% obedience level in Poland which scores high on PDI.

Q

what is PDI

A

Power distance Index (PDI) refers to how accepting people are of hierarchical order and inequality in society. In high PDI cultures subordinates expert to be told what to do (Hofstede, 2017). This should lead a person to be highly obedient while people from nations low on this dimension may show dissent and resistance.

Q

give research to support culture has an influence on obidence.

A

Smith & Bond (1998) found that people who belong to individualistic cultures, such as American and British cultures, are more likely to behave independently than those from collectivist cultures such as China and Japan. In collectivist cultures, group decision making is highly valued, but in individualistic cultures people are more concerned with their independent success than the well-being of their community
