Before Reading
A
- Read the title
- Read any subheadings throughout the text
- Look at any pictures
- Read the captions to any pictures
- Flip through and scan read the text.
- Read any comprehension question you have to answer and highlight the keywords.
- Activate prior knowledge - what do I already know about the topic?
- Make any predictions.

- Circle any words you don’t know.
- Look up known words and write meaning in the column as you read.
- Highlight keywords.
- Write any questions in the column.
- Re-read.

1. Summarize what you’ve read by discussing it with a partner (if possible). 2. Ask any questions you have. 3. Make connections. 4. Answer the comprehension questions.

R - Read the text (by chunking it into paragraphs)
A - Ask yourself questions to locate the main idea and the key details of a paragraph
P - Put (paraphrase) the main idea and key details in your own words.
