Phonics
Instruction in relationship between letters and the sounds they represent.
Phonological Awareness
The awareness of the larger parts of spoken language, such as word level, syllable level, phonemic awareness, and onset and rime.
Fluency
Accurate reading of connected text at a conversational rate with appropriate prosody or expression. Fluent readers do not have to focus on decoding, have the ability to read quickly, and can grasp prosody and intonation (understanding of pitch).
Vocabulary
The knowledge and understanding of the structure, definition, and uses of words.
Comprehension
“The essence of reading”. Through interaction with the text and using
intentional thinking to construct meaning comprehension is achieved. Comprehension involves the reader, the text, and the activity in which comprehension occurs.
