Reading Question 9 (pg 105 - 107) Flashcards
The Message in Communication Theory:
Messages reflect action; Communicate to achieve goals. how we construct messages to achieve goals. Theorists try to pull all elements apart to understand how it is that humans manage to communicate so effectively most of the time and how to repair misunderstandings.
The Message in Communication Theory:
Symbols:
Things that stand for other things that include words *language and actions (behaviors) that allow us to convey meaning to others. One group can assign meaning to one symbol while another group assigns a different meaning to the same. Therefore the symbol can have different meanings. Perception affects symbols because how our experiences influence which stimuli receive our attention.
The Message in Communication Theory:
Language:
We learn which words represent which things. It consists not only of the words that represent things, but also the grammatical structure that tells us how the words relate to each other. Every Language has rules about what words mean and how to arrange words into sentences. We use symbols and nouns and use that to communicate.
The Message in Communication Theory:
Nonverbal Communication
wide range of actions or behaviors. Tone of voice, rate of speech, pitch, etc. Other behaviors such as body language, physical proximity, and dress. Just asa we assign meaning to the words that are spoken , we also assign meaning to these actions. Important to think about the messages we send to others through our nonverbal behaviors.
Other purposes: used as a substitute for language. Hug conveys more meaning than anything we can say when trying to comfort a friend who is distressed. Used to emphasize (pound fist on table to show passion) to contradict : “nothing’s wrong” and avoiding eye contact as if something’s wrong. Clothing shows who we are.
