What is the first step to tackling a passage in detail?
It is to get oriented
-Read the first two sentences carefully
- Understand the topic under discussion and keep an eye out for main ideas
- Know the main idea of the paragraph by the time you’re done reading
- Read the first paragraph more carefully than the others
What are the 4 categories of info that help build a good story?
- Big Picture
- Foreshadowing
- Changes in Direction
- Detail
What are big picture words for?
To signal a main idea through a
1.generalization
2.through a list of points
3. through mentioning a named person or group
Why is foreshadowing impotant
Because if an author sets up a foreshadowing statement they will tackle it later on
What are change of directions used for
To contrast, to signal a counterpoint or to go back to the main point
What are detail signals used for
To signal that something is a side detail and not part of the main idea. This is things such as:
1. An example
2. Words like also
3. Likewise
4. in other words
