REACTOR Flashcards
What does HPAC stand for ?
High pressure air compressor
What is the purpose of the high pressure?
To provide 4000 psi of air to various ships loads.
Where are the HPACs located ?
1 and 2 in 1MMR
3 and 4 in 2MMR
What does LPAP stand for ?
Low pressure Air Plant
What is the purpose of the Low Pressure Air Plant?
To provide 125 psi of air to supply dental,O2N2 controls, radar systems, pneumatic tool supply, and the vital reactor plant valve control.
Where are the LPAPs located ?
#1 in 1RAR #s 2,3,4 in 1MMR #s 5,6,7 in 2RAR #s 8,9 in 2MMR
What does DU stand for ?
Distilling Units
Purpose of distilling units ?
Provide 100,000 gallons of fresh water per day to supply ships potable water loads and reactor make up water.
Where are DUs located ?
1 and 2 are in 1MMR and 3 and 4 in 2MMR
Purpose of the Reactor fill System
To provide emergency cooling to the reactor in the event of a rupture to prevent over heating of the reactor fuel.
Components of the reactor fill system ?
- reactor fill pumps
- emergency diesel generators
- reserve feed transfer pumps
- potable water pumps
- reserve feed day tank
- fill valves
Where are the reactor fill pumps located ?
1A and 1B -1MMR
2A and 2B-2MMR
What is the purpose of the reactor ?
To produce massive amounts of heat from the fission of U-235 fuel cells.
Where are the reactors located ?
#1 Is under medical. #2 is under ships store.
What is the purpose of the reactor coolant pumps? (RCP)
To supply coolant water to the reactor core to remove the heat produced and transfers the heat to the steam generators to boil the water inside the steam generator.
How many reactor coolant pumps are there?
4 per reactor. (8) total
RCP stands for
Reactor coolant pump
Where are the reactor coolant pumps located?
Inside the reactor compartment
What does CTG stand for?
Coolant turbine generator
What is the purpose of the coolant turbine generators?
The turbine is operated by the main steam system to provide variable voltage and frequency electricity directly to 2 reactor coolant pumps. It does not supply power to ships service loads.
Where are the coolant turbine generators located?
1&2 in 1RAR
3&4 in 2RAR
What is the purpose of the main engines? (ME)
To propel the ship through the water
What is the purpose of the reduction gears?
They transfer the high speed/low torque of the main engines to low speed/high torque required for the propellers.
Where are the Main Engines located ?
1&4 -1MMR
2&3-2MMR
What does ME stand for ?
Main engines
What is the purpose of the ships service turbine generator ? (SSTG)
The turbine is operated by the main steam system to provide 4160V/60Hz/8MW electricity to the entire ship through load centers, transformers, and switchboards
What does SSTG stand for?
Ships service turbine generator
Where are the ships service turbine generators located ?
1&2-1MMR
3&4-2MMR
What is the primary purpose of the emergency diesel generators ? (EDG)
Provide electricity to the reactor fill pumps and fill components in the event of a rupture casualty.
What is the secondary purpose of the Emergency diesel generator?
To provide back-up electricity in any event when normal electricity is lost. ( in port is shore power)
Where are the EDGs located ?
1&2-FWD
3&4-AFT
What is the purpose of the the reboilers? (RBLR)
To provide low pressure auxiliary steam to ships services which require heat.
What does RBLR stand for?
ReBoiler
Where are reboilers located ?
#1 in 1A shaft alley #2 in 4B shaft alley
What does MMR stand for?
Main machinery room
What does RAR stand for ?
Reactor auxiliary room
How many main engines are on board ?
4 total
Where are the MEs located ?
1 and 4 - 1MMR
2 and 3-2MMR
Number of shafts from starboard to port ?
1,2,3,4
