Rusting
Iron and steel rust slowest in air and water
What happens to steel and iron when they rust?
They form brown flakes that gradually crumble and break away.
How to prevent rusting
By using a physical barrier on the metal such as paint or oil to keep out the air and water. Cheap but not suitable in occasions.
Attach blocks of more reactive metal such as zinc or magnesium. The more reactive metal will react with the water and air instead of iron or steel. It is called sacrificial protection
