Polymers Chem Flashcards
Definition polymer
Is a substance that has molecules made of long chains, which contain repeated groups of atoms
Natural polymers
E.g. Rubber
Polymer obtained from or certain trees
(Used to make some glues)
What can happen to the properties
It’s properties can be changed by vulcanisation
Vulcanisation
Rubber is heated with sulphur- a reaction occurs and forms cross-links between the long molecules
Cross-links
Make rubber rubber much harder and tougher thanks to the cross links, molecules can’t slid past each other which makes the rubber always go back to its original position.
Other examples of synthetic polymers
DNA
Proteins
Starch
Cellulose
Not natural polymers
Have been developed by scientists
Have been made using raw material from crude oil
Made in laboratories and factories by polymerisation
Polymerisation
Lots of small molecules called monomers joins together in chains

Poly(—–) is always made by the thing inside the brackets
E.g. Poly( ethene ) is made form ethene
