Ceramics chem Flashcards
How are ceramics formed
They are usually formed by heating and then cooling
During the heating
When clay is heatedChemical reactions occur and new compounds are formed
During the cooling
Crystals form and blind together in the ceramic
The longer the cooling….
The bigger the crystals are since the atoms have had time to create a lattice structure
Lattice structure:
Large number of atoms all joined together in a fixed regular pattern
They are stiff because….
Many atoms are bonded together with strong bonds in a rigid structure
They have high melting points because….
Of the strength of the atoms
Glass is different because….
They do not have a regular pattern
All have similar physical properties
Hard Stiff Strong when compressed High melting points Heat resistant Good insulators of heat and electricity Very un reactive
