Reactions Of Metals with Water Flashcards
Lithium
Appearance before reaction=dull dark grey on outside, shiny and silver when cut
During reaction with water
Floats and moves around, fizzing/effervescing
Least reactive
Lithium+water -> lithium hydroxide +hydrogen
Sodium
Appearance before reaction
Dull dark grey on outside, shiny and silver when cut
Floats and moves around, flame, fizzes and melts into a sphere
Sodium + water -> sodium hydroxide + hydrogen
Potassium
Dull dark grey, shiny inside tarnishes quickly
Floats and moves around quickly, fizzing and crackling
Gives off lilac flame as it reacts
Potassium + water -> potassium hydroxide + hydrogen
Is there a pattern?
Yes
Grey to start, each one easier to cut and tarnish faster than last
Reactions become more violent up the reactivity series
They are all called alkali metals……
So when reacted to water form an alkali
General word equation
Metal+ water -> metal hydroxide + hydrogen
Calcium
Calcium + water-> calcium hydroxide + hydrogen
