Polluting Gases (sulfur Dioxide And Carbon Dioxide) Flashcards
Sulfur dioxide
SO2
Sulfur= impurity in fossil fuels
When burnt, sulfur + oxygen -> sulfur dioxide
Sulfur dioxide reacts with water in atmosphere-> sulfuric acid-> acid rain
Sulfur can be removed from fuels BEFORE they are burned eg in vehicles or can be removed from waste gases after combustion eg in power stations
Nitrogen oxides
The high temp in engines -> nitrogen and oxygen react together in the air, forming nitrogen oxide
Nitrogen oxides react with water and oxygen in the atmosphere to form nitric acid-> acid rain
Nitrogen oxides can cause breathing difficulties (asthmatics)
Carbon dioxide
Green house gas -> collects in atmosphere + traps heat close to Earth’s surface
- > cause temperature on Earth to increase
- > climate change
How to reduce carbon dioxide emissions?
Use alternative fuels eg hydrogen
Hydrogen as a fuel
Hydrogen + oxygen -> water
Chemical reaction
Energy released used for propelling
Pros of hydrogen fuel cells: cleaner and more efficient , reduced green house gas emissions
Cons of hydrogen fuel cells: production methods of collecting hydrogen as yet still do cause emissions
Very expensive
Few garages to fill up with hydrogen
Hoffman voltameter
Twice amount of hydrogen as oxygen
Why is this
2 atoms of hydrogen for every 1 atom of oxygen (H2O)
