Oxidation Reactions Flashcards
Metal oxides
Alkali (blue indicator)
Metal oxides often insoluble in water, but if they do dissolve they form alkaline solutions
Non metal oxides
Acidic (red/yellow)
Non metal oxides are often soluble and tend to form acidic solutions in water
Copper
Copper+oxygen -> copper oxide
Mass increases as the oxidation reaction produces ‘film’ over copper
Iron
Orange flame, burns brighter in oxygen
Blue alkali
Iron + oxygen -> iron oxide
Carbon
Yellow acidic
Orange flame
Burned brighter in oxygen
Carbon + oxygen-> carbon oxide
Magnesium
Burn bright white light
Brighter in oxygen
Blue alkali
Oxygen + magnesium -> magnesium oxide
Sulfur
Burns purple flame
Brighter in oxygen
Red acidic
Oxygen + sulfur -> sulfur oxide
Sodium
Burned yellow flame burnt brighter in oxygen
Alkali
Oxygen + sodium -> sodium oxide
