Reactions Of Metals Flashcards
What is a metal + acid?
Salt + hydrogen.
What is metal + oxygen?
Metal oxide.
What is metal + water?
Metal hydroxide.
How would you know a chemical reaction had taken place?
You may see bubbles or colour change.
What is the test for hydrogen?
The “squeaky pop” test
What is the test for oxygen?
Get a glowing splint and place it in a sample of gas, if it re -ignites then it then the gas is oxygen.
Why do some metals not react at all?
The products of acid/metal reactions are a salt and hydrogen gas. Some metals are so un reactive they don’t react with anything at all
What is the reactivity series?
The reactivity series shows all of the metals and are in an order to show which metals are the most reactive to the metals that are the least reactive.
What is a displacement reaction?
Where an element higher in the reactivity series displaces the lower element in the reactivity series in order for a reaction to take place. For example
Zinc chloride + potassium will become
Potassium chloride + zinc.
What is an ore?
A naturally occurring solid material from which a metal or valuable mineral can be extracted profitably.
How can metals be extracted from their ores?
For reactive metals like aluminium are extracted by electrolysis. While a less reactive metal like iron can be extracted using carbon or carbon monoxide.
What is a ceramic?
A ceramic is made of clay and is permanently hardened by heat, they are also hard and brittle.
What is a polymer?
A substance from a large number of units bonded together. E.g. Many synthetic organic materials used as plastics and resins.
What are composites?
A thing made up of several parts or elements.
