Reactions Flashcards
What are the 5 things that effect the rate of reaction?
Temperature Pressure Surface Area Concentration Catalyst
How does temperature affect the rate of reaction?
When there is a higher temperature the particles in the reactants have more energy so collide more and react quicker
How does pressure affect the rate of reaction?
The higher the pressure the more particles there are in a certain volume the more collisions there are and the quicker it reacts
How does surface area affect the rate of reaction?
The higher the surface area the more particles that collide and the quicker the reaction is
How does concentration affect the rate of reaction?
The higher the concentration the more particles there are in a given volume the more collisions there are and the quicker the reaction is
How does a catalyst affect the rate of reaction?
A catalyst lowers the activation energy to make the reaction happen sooner.
What are reversible reactions?
Reactions that can be easily reversed
What is dynamic equilibrium?
When the reversible reaction is happening equally both ways
What is Le Chatelier’s principle?
If the conditions of an equilibrium is changes so will the position of the equilibrium
What is an exothermic reaction?
A reaction that gives out heat
What is an endothermic reaction?
A reaction that takes in heat
How do you work the energy given out in a reaction?
Add up all the energy needed to break the old bonds
Add up all the energy given when the new bonds are formed
Find the difference and if the energy needed is bigger then the reaction is endothermic and vice versa
