Bonds Flashcards
What is a covalent bond?
When two non-metals react and they share an electron
How many bonds can an atom make?
It depends on how many electrons are needed to fill up it’s outer shell
Why do covalent bonds have such low boiling points?
The attraction between the two atoms is weak so not much energy is needed to overcome them
What is an ionic bond?
When a non-metal and metal react and an electron is transferred between the atoms. The atoms them form ions.
What makes a positive ion?
A metal as it loses electron(s) to the non-metal
What makes a negative ion?
A non-metal as it gains electron(s) from the metal
What is a metallic bond?
A bond between two metals where the electrons are removed from their position and all the ions are positive
What is a giant structure?
A structure e.g. diamond that is made up of lots of covalent bonds
How do you work out reacting masses?
Take a balanced equation and see how what atoms are in it
Look up the masses in the periodic table and add them up
How much Sodium Oxide is produced when you react 50g of Sodium with excess oxygen
67.4g
