Reactions Flashcards
Substitution reaction
UV light
Cl2 + CH4 -> HCl +CH3Cl
Addition Reaction
Only reacts with double bond
Alkene + Bromine -> Haloalkane
Hydrogenation reaction
Needs Nickel catalyst and 60 degrees.
Propene + hydrogen -> Propane
Hydration
Needs catalyst and 300 degrees.
Alkene + water(steam) -> alcohol
Ethanol uses
Fuel
Alcoholic drinks
Solvent in perfumes, inks and gules
Ethanol (fermentation of glucose)
C6H12O6 -> with yeast catalyst C2H5OH + CO2
Ethanol (ethene +steam)
C2H4 +H20 -> C2H5OH
Advantages + disadvantages: Fermentation of glucose
Advantage: Simple method + Uses renewable resources
Disadvantage: Not a continuous process, slow reaction, produces low purity
Advantages + disadvantages: Ethene +steam
Adavantages: Small scale equipment, continuous process, reaction is fast, produces high purity ethanol
Disadvantages: Uses non-renewable resources
