Organic Chem Flashcards
Homologous Series
Is a series of organic compounds that have a similar chemical structure and chemical properties
Organic Compounds
Compounds consisting of mostly carbon atoms most commonly covalently bonded to hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorous atoms.
Hydrocarbons
Are molecules which only contain carbon and hydrogen atoms
Functional groups
Are specific groups of atoms within a compound that affect the properties of the compound.
Saturation
Alkanes - Are classified as saturated molecules since the carbon atoms are all bonded, with single bonds, to neighboring atoms.
Alkenes - Are classified as unsaturated molecules since the molecules contains at least one carbon to carbon double bond.
Bromine water test
Bromine water which is orange, can be used to test for unsaturation. Alkenes, due to their carbon to carbon double bond, will decolorize the bromine water. Alkanes will not and so the orange colour of the bromine water remains.
Cracking
Large hydrocarbon molecules can be broken down into smaller molecules using a catalyst. This is an example of a thermal decomposition reaction.
