Reactions Flashcards
1
Q
Exothermic Reactions
A
- If the energy stored in the reactants is greater than the energy stored in the products, the reaction is exothermic. - They usually feel warm.
2
Q
Endothermic Reactions
A
- If the energy stored in the reactants is less than the energy stored in the products, the reaction is endothermic.
- They usually feel cold.
3
Q
Combustion
A
- Combustion is a chemical process or a reaction between Fuel (Hydrocarbon) and Oxygen.
- When fuel and oxygen react it releases heat and light energy.
- Heat and light energy then result in the flame.
- Hydrobcarbon + Oxygen = Heat energy.
4
Q
Respiration
A
- Respiration is the chemical process by which organic compounds release energy.
- The compounds change into different ones by exergonic reactions.
5
Q
Corrosion
A
- Corrosion, wearing away due to chemical reactions.
- It occurs whenever a gas or liquid chemically attacks an exposed surface.
- Accelerated by warm temperatures and by acids and salts.
6
Q
Decomposition
A
- A decomposition reaction can be defined as a chemical reaction in which one reactant breaks down into two or more products.
- Decomposition is the breakdown or change of a material or substance.
7
Q
Combination
A
- A combination reaction is a reaction in which two or more substances combine to form a single new substance.
8
Q
Neutralisation
A
- Neutralisation is the reaction between an acid and a base.
9
Q
Acids and Metals
A
- Acids react with most metals and, when they do, a salt is produced.
10
Q
Acids and Carbonates
A
- When acids react with carbonates, such as calcium carbonate, a salt, water and carbon dioxide are made.
