Reaction Types Flashcards
What are radio isotopes?
Isotopes that are unstable. They decay over time and release energy(nuclear radiation)
What is a half life?
The time taken for half a substance to decay into other atoms.
What is alpha radiation?
The least penetrating radiation. Helium atoms with a 2+. Stopped by paper or even air, very strong ionising
What is beta radiation
A fast moving electron, second most penetrating, stopped by aluminium, moderately ionising
What is gamma radiation
The strongest radiation, it has no mass, it is EMR/ a wave, it is stopped by thick lead, and isn’t very ionising.
What are isotopes
Different atoms of the same element(same amount of protons) but a different atomic number(different amount of neutrons)
What is hydroxide?
A polyatomic ion OH-
What is carbonate
A polyatomic ion,
-2
CO3
