Reaction Orders Flashcards
What are reaction orders
Reaction order tells us how the conc of the reactants affect the rate
Double the reactant conc, rate stays the same
Reactant has an order of 0 doesn’t change the rate
Double the reactant conc, rate also doubles
Reactant has an order of 1 changing conc affects rate. Directly proportional
Double the reactant conc, rate quadruples
Reactant has an order of 2 changing conc affects the rate
Overall order
Sum of all orders in a reaction
Finding orders of reactants in a reaction
Monitor how each reactant affects the rate
Can continuously monitor a reactant and draw a conc-time graph then a rate-conc graph
Or use the initial rate method find how rate changes when conc of each reactant change
Finding orders part 2
Each reactant see if they affect rate by excluding the others
0 order no effect on rate
1st order affect rate proportional
2nd order affect rate doubling it
Finding reaction orders using graphs
Conc time graph find grad at specific points gives points for a rate time graph
Smooth curve
Also plot rate-conc graph
Shape of rate-conc graph tell us order of reactant
Rate-conc graphs
Zero order line is horizontal ROR no reaction
1st order graph increases proportionally y=x
2nd order graph increases exponentially
