Initial Rates Flashcards
Initial Rate of reaction
Rate at the start of the reaction
Found from conc-time graph
When T=0 draw tangent
Calculate gradient = rate
Initial rate method
time how long it takes for a set amount of product to form at beginning of a reaction to find the initial rate
Initial rate calculations
No of moles of products there are
No of moles of reactants you’re interested in when products form
Divide by volume to find conc
Change in conc over time = rate of reaction
Clock reactions
Add a known amount of substance that reacts with product interested in
Substance reacts immediately as product forms
As soon as the substance used up, the presence of the unreacted substance causes a colour change
The quicker the endpoint the faster the reaction
