monitoring reactions Flashcards
Reaction Rates
Reaction rate is the change in the amount of reactant and products per unit time (conc/time)
Continuous Monitoring
How the product or reactant changes over the complete course of a reaction
Measuring formation of a gas
Gas given off - collect in a gas syringe and record how much you have in regular intervals
Measure change in mass
Measure change in mass at regular intervals as gas is lost using a mass balance
Measuring a colour change and what is a colourimeter
Using a colourimeter (measure absorbance of a particular wavelength of light by a solution)
- Set colourimeter to wavelength interested in measuring
- Calibrate colourimeter sample of distilled water in cuvette place in colourimeter and set to 0
- Carry out creation and take samples of reaction at regular intervals measure absorbance of each one
Measure change in PH
Either H+ or OH- ions are produced monitor reaction to see change in PH (can use PH meter)
Proccesing Data
Draw conc-time graph (determine Rate)
Work out reaction order
- use initial conc of reactant interested in and work out moles
- work out how many moles products have formed
- use balanced equation to work out mole of reactant
- subtract no. of moles of reactant from initial number find no. of moles of reactant at that point
- divide no of moles of reactant by volume of reaction mixture to find conc of reactant at that point
