what is the catholic perspective on justice
Restoring God’s justice in the world is an important part of being a follower of Jesus
Believe that people show concern for justice because human nature has been created in the image and likeness of God
Understanding of justice is built upon fundamental religious beliefs e.g
- God is creator of all
- Each person if created in the image and likeness of
God – each person is deserving of dignity and respect
- Each person is called to be a steward of God’s creation
- The dignity of the human person is at the heart of the
social teachings of the Catholic Church
explain the development of justice
The extent to which people express their potential for social justice depends upon the extent to which they have developed it
People show basic concern for justice at a young age
Children: cry, fight of argue when they feel their sense of justice is violated
When children begin to mature: become annoyed if the right of a sibling of friend is violated
Teenagers: concern for other’s rights extends into the human community (marginalised etc.)
- Many people want to become involved in social justice
- When they fail to respect others they feel a sense of
guilt

Are a body of teachings that deal with justice in society
They seek to directly apply the beliefs of the church to the needs of justice in the world
Come in the form of formal statements e.g. encyclicals
- Rerum Novarum was the first CST by Pope Leo XIII,
addressing right of workers in post-industrial revolution
age.
- Catholic believe people should show concern and
respect for God and his creation
- The dignity of each person should be upheld and
respected
what is the foundation of Catholic Social Teachings
Grounded in the bible and tradition of the Church
Founded upon beliefs of the Church:
- Natural law
- Divine law
- Understanding of the conscience
what is God’s original vision for creation
revealed in genesis
Original state of justice:
- People have four harmonious relationships:
- Harmony with God
- Harmony with themselves
- Harmony with others
- Harmony with the rest of creation
God created humans to relate with their creator
His state of original justice was damaged by original sin
explain the dignity of the human person (CST)
The dignity of every human person is the foundation of CST
originates from God because we’re all made in his image and likeness
No human being should have their dignity or freedom compromised
Poverty, hunger, injustice and oppression make it impossible to commensurate with this dignity

The earth and all life on it are part of God’s creation and we are called to respect this gift
We are responsible for taking care of the world we live in and for sharing all the wonders and resources the earth gives us
We are called to respond and adopt new ways of living as the environment changes

Caring for those who are less well off poor is everyone’s responsibility
Preferential care should be shown to vulnerable and marginalised people, whose needs and rights are given special attention in God’s eyes

Subsidiarity requires decisions that are made by the people closest and most affected by the concerns of the community

The common good is achieved when we work together to improve the wellbeing of people in our society and the wider world.
The rights of the individual to personal possession and community resources must be balanced with the needs of the disadvantaged and dispossessed

Everyone belongs to one human family
everyone has an obligation to promote the rights and developments of all people across communities, nations and the world, irrespective of national boundaries.
what is the biblical vision of human dignity
Grounded in revelation and human freedom (to accept/reject communication with God)
Human person is made in the image and likeness of God
Human dignity flows from ones’ relationship with God

Rests on a foundation of faith that God is the creator of all life
Humans are fulfilled through faith
Humans are unique to loving and knowing God
Humans are responsible for the protection of human dignity
what is the political vision of human dignity
Foundation is equality
Each person is independent and has rights and responsibilities bounded from legal limits
Role of the political state is active but limited:
- State must protect right
- State must promote general welfare of its citizens and
insure public order
- State shouldn’t interfere in matters of faith.
what is reconciliation
Definition: An act of prayer or self denial carried out by a person as part of their sorrow for sin and decision to turn to God and away from evil
