RCRA Flashcards
What is RCRA? What does it regulate?
Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. It regulates hazardous waste.
What are the two types of waste that RCRA regulates?
It regulates solid waste and hazardous waste.
What is defined as a solid waste?
It’s defined as waste from a waste treatment plant, water supply treatment plant, or air pollution control facility and other discarded material that includes solid, liquid, semisolid, or contain3 gaseous material.
When is solid waste considered discarded?
It’s considered discarded after 90 days of storage,
What is a hazardous waste?
A solid waste or combination of solid waste that may cause/pose a potential hazard to human health or the environment without proper storage; can contribute to an increase in mortality or a serious irreversible illness
What are some characteristics of hazardous waste?
- Ignitability
- Corrosively
- Reactivity
- Toxicity
Where are some listed hazardous waste found?
- Found in EPA lists in its regulations
- Includes wastes from common industrial processes, specific industrial, unused/discarded chemicals.
What are the 3 rules for hazardous waste?
Mixture Rule, derived from rule, and contained in policy
What is the mixture rule?
Listed wastes mixed with other non-hazardous waste are still hazardous waste
What is the derived from rule?
Wastes derived from listed hazardous waste are still hazardous waste.
What is the contained-in policy?
Material that are contaminated with listed hazardous waste and are treated as hazardous waste.
What are the three types of actors that RCRA regulate?
Generators, transporters, and TSDFs (treatment, storage, and disposal facilities)
