Pesticides Flashcards
What is FIFRA?
Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act.
What are the steps in FIFRA?
- All pesticides sold/distributed in the United States (also imported pesticides) have to be registered/licensed for sale by EPA.
- EPA may not register pesticides if they present unreasonable risk and can revoke, suspend, or limit pesticide registrations.
- EPA must review each pesticide registration every 15 years.
What is FQPA?
Food Quality Protection Act.
Which acts did FQPA amend?
FIFRA and FFDCA
What are the steps in FQPA?
- EPA sets tolerances for pesticide residues on foods at level that provides reasonable certainty of no harm.
- These tolerances takes account of cumulative exposures/risks from multiple pesticides
- When setting tolerances, EPA must give special attention to vulnerable sub populations and especially children - use of 10x safety factor
In what year did Congress give FIFRA authority to EPA.
In 1972.
What is the Delaney Paradox?
If the food additive is found to be carcinogenic, then it cannot be sold.
What is the 1996 FQPA.
EPA has to find that pesticides has reasonable uncertainty of no harm, but there has to be a tolerance on RAW foods.
What does the FQPA look at?
Looks at whether pesticide in food affects the neuro development in babies and children.
What do companies have to do in regards to pesticide usage?
Companies have to figure out their tolerable threshold of pesticide usage in terms of how it will affect children and babies.
