ray model of light Flashcards
how does light travel
-in a straight line
-cannot bend
what is a luminous object
Objects that are able to emit light on their own
what is a non-luminous object
-Objects that do not emit light on their own
-Reflect light into our own eyes.
-Can only be seen in the presence of light source
what is the incident ray
the light ray hitting the
reflecting surface
what is the reflected ray
the Light ray travelling away from the reflecting surface after bouncing off the surface
what is the angle of incidence
Angle between the incident ray and the normal
what is the angle of reflection
Angle between the reflected ray and the normal
what is a plane mirror and what properties does it have
a smooth and flat reflecting surface
-Same size as the object
-upright
-laterally inverted
-Virtual(not real)
-Same distance from the mirror as object
what are some uses of plane mirrors
Check our appearance
-Line walls in a building to make interior
-Periscopes
-Reflect the eye chart
what is a convex mirror
a mirror that curves outwards
what are the properties of a convex mirror
-Virtual
-Upright
-Smaller than the object
-Provides a wide field of vision :
used when large area needs to be seen
what are some uses of a convex mirror
-At road junctions to allow drivers to see around blind corners
-At corners of shops to allow shopkeepers to see large area of shop
-Rear-view mirrors/ side mirrors, allow driver to see large area of traffic
what is a concave mirror
a mirror that curves inwards
what are the properties of a concave mirror
-Virtual
-Upright
-Larger than the object (magnified)
-Used when a magnified image is needed
what are some uses of a concave mirror
- Dentist: to form magnified image of teeth
- Headlights of car: reflect light from bulbs in headlights to form strong beams of light
- vanity:Allow us to shave or apply make-up easily
