Rates of reactions Flashcards
What is a rate of a reaction?
The measure of how fast reactants turn into products
How can you measure the rate of a reaction?
Reactant or product divided by time
What is activation energy?
The minimum amount of energy for a reaction to occur
Name 5 examples of factors effecting the rate of a reaction?
1) Temperature
2) Concentration
3) Pressure
4) Surface area
5) Catalysts
How does temperature affect the rate of a reaction?
Speeds up particles and energy which increases frequency of collisions and therefore increasing the ROR
How does concentration affect the rate of a reaction?
The more particles there are in a specific volume increases frequency of collisions and therefore increases ROR
How does pressure affect the rate of a reaction?
A smaller volume means the molecules are closer together and the frequency of collisions is higher therefore increasing the ROR
How does surface area affect the rate of a reaction?
The smaller the pieces the larger the surface area meaning there is more space for collisions and therefore increasing the ROR
How can you tell on a graph how fast the ROR is?
By how steep the gradient is
How do you find the gradient of a line?
Draw a tangent and then find the change in Y over the change in X
What are catalysts?
Substances that increase the ROR without changing itself or the reaction.
How do catalysts affect the rate of reaction?
They decrease the activation energy by providing an alternative energy pathway
How can we show the change of a reaction due to catalysts
reaction profiles
What is an enzyme?
Biological catalysts
What is an example of an enzyme?
Yeast- makes alcoholic drinks
