Halogens Flashcards
What group are halogens part of?
Group7
What do halogens exist as?
diatomic molecules
What are diatomic molecules?
Pairs of atoms sharing an electron forming a covalent bond
What happens to the reactivity as you go down the group?
Decreases
What properties increase as you go down the group?
Boiling and melting points
What does florine “look” like?
Poisonous yellow gas
What does chlorine “look” like?
Poisonous green gas
What does Bromine “look” like?
Poisonous red-brown liquid(orange vapour)
What does Iodine “look” like?
Dark gray solid (purple vapour)
Describe the test for Chlorine?
Damp litmus paper turns red then bleaches white
Why does the reactivity decrease as you go down the group?
The outershells get further and further away from the nucleus making the force weaker.
What is a Halide?
When a metal reacts with a halogen
What happens when a more reactive halogen is reacting with a less reactive halogen?
The more reactive one replaces the other
What kind of reaction is a displacement reaction?
A redox reaction
