Rates Of Reaction Flashcards
How can you measure the rate of reaction?
The rate of any chemical reaction can be measured by measuring how quickly a reactant is used up or how quickly a product is formed.
What are the factors effecting rate of reaction?
Temperature Pressure Catalyst Surface area Concentration
What is collision theory?
For a reaction to occur particles must collide frequently and with enough energy.
What is activation energy?
The minimum amount of energy required to start a reaction.
What does a catalyst do?
Catalysts lowers the activation energy needed for a reaction to take place. This reduces energy needed to start a reaction.
What are advantages of catalysts?
Allow greater profit in industry
They can be re used
They increase rate of reaction so save money
Lowers activation energy reducing environmental impacts
What are the disadvantages of catalysts?
Expensive to buy
Require regular cleaning
Different catalysts required for different reactions
Poisoned catalysts- a catalyst with impurities stopping reactions happening
