Q

Properties of alkanes

A

Longer the alkane the more viscous it it

The shorter the Allan’s the lower the boiling point and the more flammable it is

Q

Where are alkanes found?

A

Alkanes are found in oil. All alkanes mixed up have to be separated and this can be done as they have different boiling points

Q

What is fractional distillation? How does it work?

A

It is the method used to separate alkanes.

1) crude oil is heated
2) short chain alkanes have lower boiling points so enter fractionating column first
3) they move up the column
4) at the same time longer alkanes begin to evaporate
5) short chain alkanes move to the top and into the condenser where it condenses to liquid and can be collected
6) the same can then happen with longer alkanes until they are all separated
