Rates of reaction Flashcards
ROR
The rate of a chemical reaction is the change in concentration of a reactant or a product by unit time
Order of reaction
Indicates how the concentration of a reactant affects the rate of reaction
Half life
The half-life of reactant is the time taken for the concentration of the reactant to fall to half of its original concentration
Rate determining step
The rate determining step is the slowest step of a reaction mechanism of a multi step reaction
activation energy
The minimum energy required for reaction to take place by the breaking of bonds in the reactants
effect of temperature on ROR
•as the temp of a reaction mixture is increased, the ROR INCREASES
• at a higher temp the average energy of the molecules increases
• a greater proportion of molecules have energy GREATER THAN or EQUAL TO the activation energy
• more FREQUENT successful collisions occur
factors which affect the rate of chemical reaction
•concentration of reactant
•temperature
•use of a catalyst
•surface area (for solids)
•pressure (for gases only)
The simple collision theory
For a chemical reaction to occur molecules must …
•collide with each other
•have energy greater than equal to the activation energy
•must collide in the correct orientation
