Rates of reaction Flashcards
What is the rate of reaction?
The speed at which the reaction takes place.
What are the variables which can affect the rate of a chemical reaction?
Temperature, concentration, surface area/particle size, catalyst
What are the things we can see to show a chemical reaction has taken place?
New substance, gas given off, colour change, precipitation forms( forms a solid from two liquid), change in temperature
What needs to happen in a chemical reaction?
The particles must collide(bump into each other) with enough energy to form new products
What is the effect of increasing concentration in a reaction?
The higher the concentration the faster the rate of reaction.
What is a catalyst?
Substances that speed up chemical reactions but can be recovered chemically unchanged at the end of the reaction.
What is the effect of particle size in a reaction?
The greater the surface area, the higher the chance of collisions occurring and the faster the rate of the reaction.
What is the effect of temperature in a chemical reaction?
The higher the temperature the faster the rate of reaction and vice versa.
explain why there is a loss in mass during a reaction
There is a gas being produced which escapes into the air
