Rates of reaction Flashcards

1
Q

Observing chemical reactions

Reveal answer wowow

A

Literally the first page is know what reactions happens like err idk fizzing, gas bubbles, temp change, burning, pops, awiughlgiawdlhougad

Q

Rate of a chemical reaction ( its speed )

A

Nvm about this one its telling us to order chemical changes on which is the fastest

So dumb

3
Q

How does time taken relate to rate of chemical reaction?

A

Shorter/quicker the time taken, the faster/slower the rate of reaction

Q

Explain rate of reaction in high concentration in terms of particles

A

Higher the concentration, the more particles in a fixed area. More frequent collisions so they will react faster. Rate of reaction = high

Q

Explain rate of reaction in low concentration in terms of particles

A

Lower the concentration, less particles in a fixed area. Less frequent collisions so they will react slower. Rate of reaction = low

Q

How to calculate rate from time?

A

Rate (s^-1) = 1 divided by average time(s)

Sometimes it’ll tell u to times by 100 on table idk its in the booklet

Q

State and explain, using particle theory, your conclusion from the concentration investigation

^^^ this is a MODEL ANSWER wtf????

A

Haha trolled just remember those cards explaining rate of reaction of high conc and low conc

Good luck bro

Q

Why does the rate also increase when temperature increases

MODEL ANSWER HOLY SHIT

A

Increase temperature = particles gain energy + move faster.
There’ll be more particles with enough energy to react.
More frequent collisions between particles leading to faster rate of reaction.

Q

How to know if an experiment is fair from volume and conc. of both acids?

It’s in page 17 about err which dissolves faster, a sugar cube or granulated sugar?

Q

What can u understand about surface area?

A

The larger the particle, the smaller the surface area

Bro this was in the booklet why does this sound super off

Q

Explain, using particle theory, why you have drawn the line like this. You should include a diagram to help explain surface area.

MODEL ANSWER hiugafiouaf

But like this in other words is like:
How does powder cause rate of reaction to be faster?

A

Increased the surface area, by moving from lumps to powder, increases the number of particles available on the surface that can react. There will be more frequent collisions between particles and it leads to a faster rate of reaction.

Q

How can coal dust most likely to cause an explosion than lumps of coal?

A

Coal dust has larger surface area than coal lumps + can fly in air therefore more likely of explosion

This is in a mine okay?

Q

What is a catalyst?

Don’t get too fixated with biology

A

A substance that speeds up a chemical change and does not get used up in the process

17
Q

What test can be used to identify oxygen gas?

A

Insert glowing splint into oxygen

18
Q

What must a substance contain to speed up rate of reaction?

A

Enzymes (biological catalysts)

19
Q

What are catalysts?

Not what it is

A

Catalysts are reaction specifics

Just like enzymes wow

20
Q

Explain how a catalyst increases the rate of reaction

ITS A MOTHER FUCKING MODEL ANSWER OMG

A

Lowers the activation barrier by offering an alternative pathway at lower energy

This sounds hard to learn :(

21
Q

This sounds random but
Explain why enzymes are used and the conditions needed for….

Enzymes in:
Biological washing powder
Fermentation
Baking

A

Biological washing powder:
Wash clothes at lower temp, save money by not using heat

Fermentation:
Yeast is added to water, sugar and the fruit of choice to provide the zymane? (it’s in my booklet help ) enzyme that converts sugar into alcohol

Baking:
Yeast added to bread dough to convert sugars into alcohol and CO2 (alcohol evaporates) and bread rises
