Limestone Flashcards
Name three metal carbonates (any ones)
- Lithium Carbonate
- Calcium Carbonate
- Sodium Carbonate
(any ‘metal’ + ‘carbonate’ is correct)
What are carbonates the chemical opposites of?
Acids
What is ‘thermal stability’?
How much heat something can withstand before decomposing (falling apart basically idk)
What is the formula for metal thermally decomposing?
Metal carbonate → metal oxide + carbon dioxide
What is limestone’s chemical name and formula?
Calcium Carbonate, CaCO₃
What is Calcium Oxide’s traditional name and formula?
Quicklime, CaO
What is Calcium Hydroxide’s traditional name and formula?
Slaked Lime, Ca(OH)₂
What are the word and symbol equations for the reactions in the limestone cycle?
Calcium Carbonate (limestone) + heat → Calcium Oxide (quicklime) + Carbon Dioxide CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂
Calcium Oxide + Water → Calcium Hydroxide (slaked lime)
CaO + H₂O → Ca(OH)₂
(this second reaction creates a ton of heat, very exothermic)
What is limewater?
Diluted Calcium Hydroxide
What does Limewater (dilute slaked lime) react with to make Calcium Carbonate (limestone) again?
Carbon Dioxide
What colour does limewater go when reacting with carbon dioxide?
Milky
Name three uses of limestone
- Construction (bricks, concrete)
- Extracting Iron from it’s ore (minecraft)
- Neutralizing acidic soil
What are the 4 (5) benefits of Limestone?
- Creates Jobs
- Improves crop yield
- Valuable raw material
- Supports building industry
- Coolest rock (wowzers)
What are 4 drawbacks of limestone?
- Destroys habitats
- Destroys natural beauty (giant hole in the hill after all limestone is taken)
- Noise and dust pollution from quarrying
- Increased traffic near quarries
Describe the entire limestone cycle >:)
- Limestone aka Calcium Carbonate aka CaCO₃
- Limestone thermally decomposes into Quicklime when heated
- Quicklime aka Calcium Oxide aka CaO
- Quicklime reacts with some H₂O to produce Slaked Lime
- Slaked Lime aka Calcium Hydroxide aka Ca(OH)₂
- Slaked Lime is diluted to become Limewater
- Limewater aka Dilute Calcium Hydroxide aka also Ca(OH)₂ but with some H₂O too
- Limewater reacts with some CO₂ to become milky (because limestone is produced)
- gg cycle repeats you’re back to limestone
