Rate of Reaction Flashcards
What is rate of reaction?
A change in products or reactants per unit time
Explain the effect on rate of reaction when there is an increase in concentration
Increase in particles means that there are more particles per unit volume, so more chance of successful collisions and the rate of reaction increases
Explain the effect on rate of reaction when there is an increase in temperature
Increase in temperature increases the rate of reaction because the reactant particles gain average kinetic energy. They move faster and collide more frequently, so successful collision increases, because more particles have energy greater than activation energy.
Explain the effect on rate of reaction when there is an increase in Surface area
Increase in surface area, particles are in small sizes or in powder form and many more particles are exposed to the acid and collisions between particles will be higher and hence rate will increase.
Explain why rate of reaction increases when there is catalyst that has been added
The more catalyst added the faster the rate of reaction this is because catalyst reduce the activation energy and more particles will collide successfully per unit time and rate increases
Explain why rate of reaction increases when pressure is increased
When gaseous reactants, pressure increases, volume decreases the gaseous particles are closer together in a given space therefore greater chance of successful collision per unit time therefore rate of reaction increases
