Covalent compounds Flashcards
What is a covalent compound?
Formed when a pair of electrons is shared between 2 atoms leading to noble electronic configuration.
What are the properties of simple covalent compounds?
They have a low boiling point and melting point cause they have weak intermolecular forces which require less energy to overcome them.
They do not conduct electricity either in molting aqueous solution because they do not have charged particles all their electrons are used in bonding
They are gases and liquid state- they have weak intermolecular forces.
What are giant covalent compound?
They contain thousands of atoms joined by strong covalent bonds.
Describe the structure of diamond.
In diamond each carbon atom is covalently bonded to form other carbon atoms in a tetrahedral shape, forming a 3D dimensional structure
Describe the structure of graphite.
In graphite each carbon atom is bonded covalently to 3 other carbon atoms in a hexagonal ring. They have a layered structure and the layers are next to each other by weak forces of attraction between them
Describe the structure of Silicone ( IV) Oxide
It is a compound that consists of silicon atoms and oxygen atom. Each silicone atoms bonds covalently to 4 oxygen atoms. Each oxygen atoms bonds covalently to 2 silicone atom in a tetrahedral shape forming a 3D structure
