Rate Of Reaction 🧪 Flashcards
What are the factors that affect rate of reaction?
1 surface area
2 concentration
3 temperature
4 light
5 pressure for gases
6 catalyst
Explain the effects of increasing any of the factors (graph)
The line for reactant with increased factor has a steeper gradient at the start and line becomes horizontal sooner so reaction ends sooner/ rate of reaction increased
Explain the effect of increasing surface area
When surface are increases more particles have a chance to react with dilute HCl. Frequency of collision between the particles increases so the rate of reaction increases.
Explain the effect of increasing concentration
When the concentration of the acid increases more particles of acid collide with the reactant (more particles per unit volume) , frequency of collision increases so rate of reaction increases
Explain the effect of temperature
When temperature increases kinetic energy of the particles increases. Frequency of collision between the particles increases so rate of reaction increases which increases the number of successful collisions
Explain the effect of pressure for gases
When pressure increases collision of molecules increases so the rate of reaction increases increases the number of successful collisions
Explain the effect of a catalyst
A catalyst is a chemical substance that alters the rate of reaction it lowers the activation energy by changing the path / route of the reaction
Why does a reaction slow down?
The concentration of the reactants is more at the beginning, more particles collide
Why does a reaction end?
One of the reactants is used up
Why does the mass of a flask and it’s contents decrease in a reaction?
Gas escapes the flask
What is the purpose of cotton wool in a flask?
To prevent the splashing of the contents from the flash
