Rate of reaction Flashcards
What is the rate of reaction?
How quickly a chemical reaction takes place
How can you tell a reaction has taken place?
Temp change
Colour change
Bubbles/fizzing
Gas produced (smoke etc.)
How to interfere with the rate of reaction
Surface area of solid / object
Change in concentration/pressure
Change in temp
Added catalyst
Catalyst experiment
Sodium theosulpahte added to HCL to see how fast it will turn cloudy to cover paper underneath beaker
(Add different concentration of HCL to measure time taken)
What is a reversible reaction?
A reaction that can go both ways
What is ‘Le Chateliers principle’
Even If dynamic equilibrium conditions change the reaction will always continue to reach equilibrium
What happens to equilibrium when added reactants
Shift to the right
Increases forward reaction
More products produced
What happened to equilibrium when removing products
Shift to left
Increases backwards reaction
Less reactants used
What happens to equilibrium when pressure is changed
Moves it to side with fewer molecules
What is the Harbour process
Making ammonia for fertilisers
N2 + 3H2 = 2NH3
Reversible reaction
High pressure = high yield + faster rate + 200 atm
Low temp = high yield + slower rate + 450’C
